A couple years ago during the big dot-com bubble I did what every other red blooded geek would do... start up a business. Luckily I mainly only lost time doing this as it failed with all the others.

We had an online consignment shop. Kind of a cross between ebay and a traditional commercial webstore. People would list their items on the site, then we would try to sell them (billing through shipping) and take a cut.

I wrote a paper on the experience over at this url. It's rather dull until you get to the end where we talk about the personalization of the website for each user through collaborative filtering. Collaborative filtering is a neat concept where you try to match people up with things they might like based on what other people liked and how similar those other people are to each other.
